General Info
Rancho Mastatal is an environmental learning and sustainable living center, rural sanctuary and lodge located in and on the edge of the last remaining virgin rainforest of Costa Rica’s beautiful Puriscal County. We practice, promote and teach about living responsibly in the tropics while educating our visitors about the significance of the world’s disappearing tropical forests. We work tirelessly to help lead local efforts in conservation, food security and production, education, natural medicine, and community growth. Our site encompasses 325+ acres of picture-perfect waterfalls, crystal-clear rivers, idyllic swimming holes, impressive trees, extraordinary wilderness views, and pristine habitat for the area’s rich flora and fauna. We are situated in a dynamic transition zone that encompasses both humid and pre-montane rainforest in one of Central America’s most undiscovered regions.
Volunteer / Internship Opportunities & Educational Opportunities
Volunteers have been an indispensable element to Rancho Mastatal over the past decade. Currently though we are accepting less volunteers during certain times of the year in order to reduce the coming and going in our community. Prospective applicants are encouraged to consider staying as guests, participating in one of our workshops, or lenghtening their stay and applying for an apprenticeship. There are still times of the year when volunteers provide an integral part of the Ranch. Please don´t hesitate to inquire about the best dates to apply.
Our goal is that each volunteer maximizes his or her learning and cultural experience, while providing Rancho Mastatal with an important source of labor, inspiration and information exchange.

Educational Opportunities
One of our primary goals is to expose our guests and students to the wonders of the rainforest and the beauty of other cultures while teaching them what it means and how to live sustainably. We do this by teaching via a variety of formats that includes workshops, internships and custom-designed project based group programs. We employ hands-on, experiential learning techniques, using the rainforest, the community of Mastatal and our dynamic site as an outdoor classroom and our staff is one of the most diverse, intelligent, energetic and experienced group of instructors anywhere.
