Ari Lazer

ari lazer bio photo copyMeet Ari Lazer, a visual artist living in Vancouver, Canada.  Ari’s artwork is a living exploration of Sacred Geometry. From a glowing 40 ft pyramid, to a temple of wooden feathers, to an illuminated kaleidoscope tent with a spinning lantern at its center, Lazer creates interactive spaces that invite people to explore the ways that the forms of the natural world create life around us.

“My study began out of a fasciation of how the ancients created their exquisite geometric forms, long before computers.  When I saw how simply and perfectly these forms created themselves from the overlapping of circles I was inspired.  When I saw how the same proportions show up across chemistry, physics, wisdom teachings in every culture – I was hooked, and wanted to find every hidden aspect of how these things were connected. ”

As Lazer continued to explore these connections, he moved from simple ink and paper artwork, to larger installations.  He’s presented his work at a wide range of arts and music festivals on the west coast including Beloved, Basscoast, the Shambhala Music Festival, Burning Man, the Vancouver International Folk Festival and many more.   He’s also presented his interactive work in more traditional settings, like the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The Sacred Light Design Company

In 2014 Ari started the Sacred Light Design Co.  (www.sacredlight.ca), as a vehicle to share beautifully crafted wooden sacred geometric creations with the world.  Working with traditional woodworking techniques, and a CNC Laser, he crafts lamps, tables, altar pieces, jewelry and artwork that explores both the roots and the untapped potential of sacred geometry.

“It’s important to me to create beautiful and precise renditions of the important canonical shapes of Sacred Geometry – the Flower of Life, Metatron’s Cube, the Sri Yantra.  But really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  I’m deeply inspired by what starts to appear when we continue to unfold these forms.  We start to see the complex forms of Islamic geometry, celtic knot work, art deco design.  What finds a home in my world, is where modern and ancient meet.”

Lazer also offers an array of wooden sacred geometry stickers, and for the Christmas season he’s working on a set of illuminated mirrors, etched from behind and set with color chaning LEDs to glow through the etch marks.  His piece In Media Res is the first of these.

Sacred Geometry Coming to A City Near You

His most recent installation, Lanterna Magica, exhibited at the Renfrew Park Moon Festival in Vancouver, explored the proportions of the icosahedron – one of the 5 platonic solids.  The tent housed a smaller icosahedron on a stand, set to whirl its light and shadow onto the white walls and ceiling.   You can see photos here: http://www.sacredlight.ca/blogs/news/72395459-lanterna-magica-whirling-lantern-installation-2015, or a video of the lantern in motion on Youtube: Spinning Sacred Geometric Lantern – Icosahedron

“People seem really captivated by the lanterns.  Simple platonic solids, that cast ornamented shadows all around the room they’re lit in.”  It was no small feat for Lazer to bring these designs to fruition.  “It probably took a year of research and development to go from a compelling idea in my head, to final product where I can be proud of every last bolt and connector, knowing that they will last in people’s homes for a long time.”

In addition to his artwork, Ari teaches the art how to draw Sacred Geometry, through his traveling classes.  He has taught in Western  Canada, the US and UK – and offers 2 day courses on the Art and Science of Sacred Geometry – exploring chemistry, physics, biology, sacred wisdom traditions, mediation and more.  For more on his teaching visit The Traveling Alchemists’ Outreach Society at www.travelingalchemists.com, you’ll also be able to find photos from many of his past art installations, a list of some of his favorite sacred geometry resources, and some helpful “how to draw” tutorials.  While Lazer is remaining close to home through the Fall, he is putting together a set of traveling dates for winter and spring of 2016, so feel free to contact him at [email protected], if you’re curious about him coming to your town. His next class in Vancouver is scheduled for Dec. 5th and 6th
